frequently asked questions

Did you know current studies suggest that there may be a link between periodontal disease, heart disease and other health conditions? In fact, research suggests that gum disease may be a more serious risk factor for heart disease than hypertension, smoking, cholesterol, gender or age. Regular cleanings and examinations at our office can help prevent gum disease.

What Causes Tooth Loss?
The most common causes of tooth loss are dental caries, also known as tooth decay, and periodontal disease, which affects the gums and bone structure that supports the teeth. Dental caries is the major cause of tooth loss in children, and periodontal disease is the major cause of tooth loss in adults; however, it too can afflict youngsters.

How Does Plaque Attack the Gums?
Plaque can also produce harmful byproducts that irritate the gums, causing gingivitis, the early stage of periodontal diseases. If plaque isn't removed daily, it will build up into a hard deposit called calculus. If plaque continues to form on top of the calculus, it can irritate the gums, and a pocket may develop between the teeth and gums. Plaque build up can eventually destroy the gums and bone that support the teeth.

Do You Handle Children's First Visits?
We create a warm, gentle and friendly atmosphere for your child's first dental visit.  We understand the importance of setting the right tone and the impact that it has on the way your child views "going to the dentist".  Our goal is to help your child enjoy going to Dr. Dinka's office.

How Can Cavities Be Prevented?
Tooth brushing and flossing are the two most important things to do for clean, healthy teeth.  Twice daliy brushing and daliy flossing are imperative to cavity free teeth.  Sugar and gooey sweets play a role also in creating decay, and it is important to keep sugar intake to a minimum.  Getting enough calcium and vitamin D also helps to ensure healthy teeth.

Can You Help My Snoring Problem?
As many as 18 million Americans suffer from undiagnosed and untreated Sleep Apnea, a condition in which the airway completely closes during sleep.  This condition increases the risk of hypertension, heart disease, and stroke. Our office can provide dental appliances as the first line of treatment for snoring and mild to moderate Sleep Apnea.

     tips

  • Bring a squeeze ball with you -  it helps relieve tension
  • Don't brush too hard - it can cause receding gums
  • Use a fairly soft toothbrush and change it every 3 months
  • FLOSS DAILY
  • You must remove plaque if you are to prevent cavities. To do this, try to always brush twice a day, preferably after meals. Floss and use a mouthwash daily
  • The proper way to brush your teeth is to hold the tooth brush at a slight angle against your teeth and to move the brush in a short back and forth motion. Make sure to brush all sides of the tooth - inside, outside and chewing surface
  • Most water supplies contain fluoride which helps fight cavities. If you don't have time to
brush your teeth, swish around some water in your mouth
  • Don't wait until a tooth ache is unbearable before going to the dentist. If the pain lasts for more then a day call your dentist and make an appointment. The earlier something is looked at the less
work will need to be done
  • Keep your eyes open; the visual stimulus will distract you from discomfort or pain
  • Even with all those hands in your mouth, try to focus on your breathing
  • Bring your iPod to block out the noise of the drill
  • Come up with a hand signal to alert the dentist when you're in pain, because a sudden movement or twitch can complicate matters
  • Take a written list of questions and concerns so you don't forget them
